Elections in five municipalities — Charlottetown, Summerside, Stratford, Cornwall and Three Rivers — are conducted by Elections PEI Tim Garrity, PEI’s chief electoral officer, said the results from the preliminary polls will be the first people see Monday night. “We would like to see 100 percent turnout,” says Elections PEI Chief Electoral Officer Tim Garrity. (CBC/Zoom) “The advanced count starts earlier in the day. So we isolate people in certain locations and there may be checkers there from the candidates,” Garrity said. As of 6:45 p.m., voter turnout was recorded at 47% in Charlottetown, 51% in Summerside, 33% in Cornwall, 46% in Stratford and 36% in Three Rivers.

Accuracy over speed

After the polls close, Garrity said workers who have been at their stations all day will have a chance to stretch their legs and prepare the counting area. “Accuracy over speed, that’s been my mantra since I got here at Elections PEI. We’ve got to get it right, before we get it done quickly,” he said. Garrity said Elections PEI is hoping for a good turnout – about 50 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in 2018. “We’d like to see a high percentage. We’d like to see 100 percent participation.” CBC will have live coverage of the election, including updated results — online and on CBC Radio One.
