Roads are treacherous around Vernon and the North Okanagan as wet snow has piled up into ice on area roads. A Dodge SX 2.0 ended up on its roof at the intersection of 32nd Avenue, 41st Street, Bella Vista Road and 30th Avenue Monday afternoon. The driver was not injured although the vehicle overturned after sliding down the bank along 32nd and overturned. Similar situations are reported throughout the region. “The storm we are experiencing is causing poor driving conditions for most of the Okanagan and Thompson areas,” says City of Vernon spokeswoman Christy Poirier.
DriveBC is reporting black ice on highways in and around the North Okanagan. The city is encouraging residents to avoid travel today if possible. However, if you must travel, slow down, drive according to the conditions, allow yourself enough space between vehicles and extra time to reach your destination. “When we have a snow or ice event, our crews clear the roads, lanes and cul-de-sacs as a priority,” says Ian Adkins, the city’s director of roads. The city has 12 pieces of equipment throughout the community in response to the snowfall, including grinders, plows, de-icing truck and sidewalk equipment. Meanwhile, a rollover crash in Coldstream at Highway 6 and Gray Road resulted in minor injuries Monday. “It really doesn’t matter if they’re wearing summer or winter tires right now because when you’re driving on ice, it’s slippery,” said Fire Chief Fionna Morganthaler-Code.
