Sudbury police have determined that 17-year-old Ashton Desormeaux took the lives of his parents, Brian and Janet Dessormeaux, before killing himself. All three were reportedly fatally shot at their home on Caruso Street in Coniston. Their bodies were discovered the evening of Oct. 30 after a person of interest reportedly broke a window with a propane tank to get in to check on the family. Officers were dispatched to the home at approximately 6:30 pm that evening. “Through the investigation and cooperation with the Medical Examiner’s Office, there is no evidence that the young man had been diagnosed with or was being treated for a mental health-related illness,” according to a media release issued by Sudbury Police on Monday. “Out of respect for the family, no further details will be released.” Police describe this as “an extremely tragic situation that has deeply affected families, friends and the community. Our deepest condolences go out to all those affected by this incident and we ask that you respect the privacy of the family’s loved ones during this very emotional time.” In their media release, police said they continue to work with community partners to provide support services to those who need it. They encourage anyone who is struggling to see a medical professional or access support services by visiting sm.cmha.ca/mental-health/find-help/. A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family’s surviving daughter. As of Monday afternoon, it had raised $21,365 of its $25,000 goal. To access the fundraiser, click here.
