Ford and Education Secretary Steven Lecce passed the Keeping Students in Classroom Act late Thursday afternoon, making it illegal for education workers to strike. On Monday, the Ford government confirmed it would withdraw Bill 28 to ensure students return to class.
“We have received and can confirm that the premier will introduce and support legislation to repeal Bill 28 in its entirety,” said Laura Walton, chair of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario Council of School Board Unions. Press conference on Monday afternoon.
After receiving the Prime Minister’s commitment in writing to repeal the legislation, CUPE has confirmed it will not continue its strike from Tuesday onwards.
Many school boards in Ontario have already confirmed that students will return to in-person learning on Tuesday.
These are the school boards they have announced so far:
TORONTO DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) sent a letter to parents, guardians and students to confirm that its schools will continue to have in-person learning on Tuesday.
If there are further updates, the TDSB says it will share them as soon as possible.
TORONTO CATHOLIC DISTRICT BACK TO SCHOOL
Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) students will return to school for class tomorrow.
The school board encourages parents to contact their child’s school for information about school activities or events that have been postponed or rescheduled due to the mass walkout.
YORK DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
All York Region School Board (YRDSB) schools will reopen for in-person learning on Tuesday.
The YRDSB confirms that all Indigenous and International Language courses will continue. Student transportation and childcare services will also operate.
MONAVENIR CATHOLIC SCHOOL
Conseil Scolaire Catholique Monavenir announced that all of its schools across south-central Ontario will be open for face-to-face learning on Tuesday.
HALTON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Primary and secondary students attending Halton District School Board (HDSB) schools will return to class on Tuesday.
“HDSB’s plan to keep elementary schools (K – 8th grade) open through an alternative distance learning program is no longer required,” HDSB said.
