Bobby Sekhon, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says more snow is still in store for parts of the island. “The next round of snowfall will be this afternoon and into tonight. It will be mostly East Vancouver Island, and especially the southern parts,” Sekhon said. “We can expect localized snowfall along East Vancouver Island of about two inches. So you’re looking at places like Nanaimo, and then for Malahat, we’re looking at more than 10cm tonight, so a little bit more along the higher ground there.” Sekhon said snow in Malahat is not expected to start before 7 or 8 p.m. about, but it is still important for people to drive safely for road conditions. He recommends making sure your vehicle is equipped with snow tires and carrying an emergency kit. The weather service has issued a weather warning for East Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo and the Malachat Highway for possible heavy snow. Overnight on Sunday, Sekhon says Campbell River received the most snow, about 12cm, followed by Zeballos with sixcm, Heriot Bay with fourcm, Port Hardy with 1.6cm and Chemainus with 0.4 cm. “If we look at the average amount of snowfall that Campbell River receives in November, it’s usually about 4 inches,” Sekhon said. “It’s not out of the question for them to have this kind of snowfall in November, but it doesn’t happen very often.” Sekhon says temperatures are expected to rise during the week, so the snow is not expected to stick around long-term.
