The research interests of Dr. Singhals focus on understanding the epidemiology and transmission of communicable diseases with the goal of developing evidence-based interventions aimed at controlling communicable diseases. As medical chief for enteric, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, Dr. Singhal leads a multidisciplinary team to assess public health risks, design surveillance systems and develop provincial guidelines for communicable disease control and prevention. His most recent work includes the areas of rabies, COVID-19, monkeypox and several enteric outbreaks. The focus of Dr. Singhal in communicable disease is supported by a strong foundation in front-line public health practice and a full-service five years at Alberta Health Services, where he provided clinical consultation to referring physicians, played an important role in the development of provincial vaccine policy, and contributed to the response of public health in emergency situations such as the Fort McMurray wildfires of 2016. His contributions to wildfire response earned him the Premier’s Award for Outstanding Service. Dr. Singhal completed his undergraduate medical training at McMaster University and training at the University of Alberta. It pursues an experiential approach to learning and discovery by integrating clinical medicine with public health practice. For a list of publications by Dr. Singhal, see PubMed.
