The winter driving season is here and Kelowna RCMP are reminding residents to take steps to stay safe on the roads. Const. Mike Della-Paolera reminds drivers that it is the law to make sure cars are properly cleaned before driving. “It is your responsibility and it is in the Motor Vehicle Act to make sure your vehicle is clear of snow. This includes on the roof and in front of the windows, on the bumper. Your entire vehicle must be clear of snow. It is a non safe cargo and may be fined.” “Not only is it a danger to people. If the snow falls down, it could hit another car and cause a traffic accident,” he added. Winter tires are required for driving on most BC highways. from October 1st to April 30th. Della-Paolera says winter tires are also a good idea for city driving. “The hills are horrendous right now in the Wilden area, East Kelowna, Black Mountain the hills are really bad so be prepared for that and if you can’t or you’re not sure stay home.” Mounties are also encouraging drivers to slow down to a speed they are comfortable with. “I would suggest if it’s 60 km/h, you drive 40 km/h,” Della-Paolera added. BCAA says drivers should also have an emergency kit in their car and ensure car batteries are maintained. “People are driving a little less because of high gas prices, maybe working from home a little more, so batteries can wear down over time, so the general advice is to try to drive your vehicle at least an hour every week. You can also buy a battery maintainer,” said Josh Smythe, BCAA’s customer service manager. An emergency kit includes a first aid kit, emergency food and water, extra clothing, flares or matches and a lighter, candles, a shovel and traction mat, sand or unclumped cat litter, and battery jumper cables. Drivers are also reminded to check their tire pressure and windshield wipers. For the latest on driving conditions, visit drivebc.ca.
