Speaking to GQ UK, God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams was asked how he stays motivated and manages the pressure to continue on one of the most beloved games in recent memory in 2018’s God of War. Along with the fact that some people don’t realize that it’s not as easy as it might seem to continue a game that reached such great heights like, “you never hear anyone say, ‘the second time I climbed Everest, it was easy.’ it also provided some fascinating insight into the team’s mindset just three months ago. “When you work with people who are at the top of what they do, you get magic,” Williams said. “I just came from a room with these people. All I could say to them was, ‘Thank you.’ They were freaking out three months ago, ‘Holy crap, the game is no good. What are we going to do?’ Williams also discussed the decision to make Kratos’ Norse mythology journey just two games rather than a trilogy. God of War Ragnarok Preview “We knew what most of the big plot points were going to be,” Williams said of what they knew going into Ragnarok after 2018’s God of War ended. “But at the time we were still talking about, ‘It’s going to be two or three games?” Me and [Cory Barlog] he kind of sided with the two, but the team was already kind of involved in the trilogy. So we say, “Well, how do we get it back?” “It’s really hard to do. Why [the team] he started saying, “So, are we going to squeeze two games into one? Because that will be impossible.’ The world knows [trilogies] and when you change things, people feel uncomfortable. But that’s usually where the magic happens. If I don’t feel like I’m scared, that I’m literally going to get fired every day because I put them in, I don’t feel like I’m doing it right.” Despite the fact that some things were “adjusted and reshaped for pacing,” Williams also confirmed that the story of God of War Ragnarok was not limited at all since they decided to make this saga only two games. We here at IGN were all for the decisions the team made as we awarded God of War Ragnarok a rare 10/10.
