PHOENIX – Maricopa County officials say about 20 percent of their election sites are experiencing issues with sorting machines across the Valley just hours after Election Day. While the specific addresses and number of problem locations have not been confirmed, the Maricopa County Recorder says technicians have been called in to fix malfunctioning precinct tagging machines. “We’ve had some issues with taggers at two locations where the sorter doesn’t pick up the ballot right away,” Richter said after being asked about two locations with reported problems – Barton Barr Library and Christ Lutheran Church. “Instead, either the Central count can be tabulated here, or if that issue can be addressed there, then it can be fed into the tabulation – or voters can go to any of the other 221 polling locations.” While a fifth of the 223 centers are affected, officials say not every machine in the affected polling area is down, so residents will still be able to submit their ballots at the location of their choice. It is still unknown why so many of the machines are not working. Voters can leave the ballot in a locked box to be counted at the end of the day, or they can “spoil” their ballot and go to a different, working polling station. Officials say these problems shouldn’t affect wait times, with some of the longest wait times being 30 to 40 minutes.
