“It was cracked,” a visibly distraught Pelosi, 82, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper of her husband’s skull after it was cracked “at the top, in two places” by a crazed intruder chasing her. “What they have to do is take the skull out, reshape it and put it back so it doesn’t get scratched or [could] pierce the brain. “So it’s a pretty serious operation,” he recalls, calling the injury “dramatic” and “pretty awful.” “But the good news was … we were told it hadn’t punctured his brain, which could have been fatal,” he said. The speaker of the House looked disappointed when reminded that the intruder had told authorities he was after her, not her husband, with the aim of taking her hostage and possibly bringing her to her knees during an interrogation. “Paul was not the target and he is the one paying the price,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.CNN “For me, that’s really the hard part – because Paul wasn’t the target, and he’s the one paying the price,” she said of her critically injured husband, who is also 82. “It’s really sad because it’s a fire fueled by misinformation … that has no place in our democracy,” said Pelosi, who admitted the brutal attack could affect her decision on whether to step down. She did, however, crack a rare smile in the conversation as she recalled her husband’s unexpected response when he came out of surgery and their son told them his wife was running to see him. Paul Pelosi’s skull was “cracked,” according to Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Doctors reportedly had to “take the skull out, reshape it and put it back in.” AP “The first thing she said was, ‘Oh, your mother is going to be so happy because the Ravens won last night,’” she said with a laugh of her “dedication” to the Baltimore NFL team. “So we thought, ‘Well, OK, that’s it.’ Pelosi said her husband is well aware he has a “long way” to a full recovery, but he is “such a gentleman, he doesn’t complain.” David DePape has been charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping and assault. Paul is nice,” he said, proudly saying he “called 911 with enough information, but not too much information” to further enrage his “menacing” attacker. “It saved his life – Paul saved his life with that call,” he insisted.
