Tropical Storm Nicole is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane before making landfall along Florida’s east coast this week, according to the National Hurricane Center. Several areas of Central Florida, including those along the coast, are under tropical storm watches and warnings or hurricane watches and warnings. Officials are warning that Tropical Storm Nicole is a dangerous storm and will bring large and destructive waves along the coast, including heavy rainfall and flooding, in addition to strong winds.

In anticipation of the storm, some schools are altering their schedules or closing. We will continue to update as additional information comes to the FOX 35 newsroom.

Brevard County Schools

Brevard County Schools announced Tuesday that they will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, November 9 & 10, due to Tropical Storm Nicole. All activities, events and programs are cancelled. The area is closed Friday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Flagler County Schools

Flagler County Schools will release students early on Wednesday, November 9th in anticipation of Tropical Storm Nicole and will remain closed on Thursday, November 10th. School will also be closed on Friday, November 11, for Veterans Day. High school students will be released at noon. High school students will be released at 1 p.m. Elementary students will be released at 2 p.m.

Lake County Schools

Lake County Schools will hold classes on Wednesday, November 9th and will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 10th & 11th due to Tropical Storm Nicole and Veterans Day. While school will be open Wednesday, all after-school activities are canceled, the district said in a statement.

Marion County Public Schools

Marion County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, November 10th.

Osceola County Schools

Osceola County Schools announced Tuesday that they will end classes one hour early on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and remain closed on Thursday, Nov. 10. Due to Veterans Day, school is already closed on Friday, November 11th. The district said classes will resume Monday, Nov. 14.

Seminole County Schools

Seminole County schools announced Tuesday during a news conference that they will be closed Wednesday, Thursday due to Tropical Storm Nicole. The area is closed Friday, November 11, for Veterans Day.

Sumter County Schools

Sumter County Schools will be closed on Thursday, November 10, 2022 due to Tropical Storm Nicole and will remain closed on Friday, November 11, 2022 in observance of Veterans Day.

Volusia County Schools

Volusia County Schools will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, November 9 & 10, 2022 in anticipation of Tropical Storm Nichole. All school activities are cancelled. School will also be closed on Friday, November 11, due to the Veterans Day holiday.

University of Central Florida

UCF announced that it will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday and that all classes and activities have been suspended. UCF Housing will remain open throughout the storm. The dining room will remain open until 3pm on Wednesday 9 November.
